Gravure cylinders, flexo plates, offset plates and cutting dies are valuable assets with finite life and a per-job cost almost nobody tracks. Gravure cylinders especially are a chronic mess: hundreds of customer-owned and own cylinders located by memory, re-engraved when worn, sometimes re-made because nobody could find the existing one. CTP plates run a few hundred rupees each and add up fast on repeat jobs.

Carton, label and packaging printers feel it most acutely, with hundreds of gravure cylinders, flexo plates and dies; commercial and offset printers carry it on offset plates and repeat-job setups; some print-finishing and converting job-shops carry it on foiling and embossing dies.

Changeovers start from a lookup instead of a search of the floor, avoidable cylinder and plate re-makes drop because the existing one is found, and tooling cost finally appears in each job's cost and re-quote.
